Apple Pay® is Changing Everything!

Apple Pay is changing the way consumers pay for products and services. The one-step payment process means you don’t have to dig through your wallet or purse to find credit cards or scrounge up some cash. Here’s what you need to know about Apple Pay . . .

What is it?
Apple Pay is a one-step payment feature exclusive to Apple® devices that avoids the need to carry credit cards. Long gone are the days of diving into your purse or wallet for cash or a credit card at check-out. Simply open Apple Pay while checking out, tap your phone onto any compatible pin pad, and you’re all done.

How secure is it?
Apple Pay is very secure thanks to tokenization and Touch ID®. Tokenization is a method that replaces credit card numbers with symbols, protecting sensitive credit card information from being stolen without your authorization. The Touch ID fingerprinting feature commonly used on Apple devices is used to secure payments, minimizing undesired purchases and other cases of unauthorized use of your card.

How can I get it?
Apple Pay can be downloaded in the Wallet® app once iOS 8.1® or later is installed in any of the following Apple devices: iPhone 6®, iPhone 6s®, iPhone 6 Plus®, iPhone 6s Plus®, iPhone SE®, iPad Air 2®, iPad mini 3®, iPad mini 4®, iPad Pro® models or the Apple Watch®. You can easily add up to eight credit or debit cards to Apple Pay using your device’s camera. You can manage your Apple Pay account in Settings.

How do I use it?
When paying within other apps, tap the ‘Buy with Apple Pay’ button and then all you have to do it is check your billing, shipping, and contact information to make sure it’s all accurate. You can also choose to pay with another card. If necessary, enter your billing, shipping and other contact information and you will not need to enter it again as Apple Pay will store it for you. Then, simply put your finger on Touch ID and once the payment has been sent successfully, a checkmark and the word ‘Done’ will appear on the screen.

You can also use Apple Pay in stores that accept contactless payments. Once you are ready to pay in the store, open the Wallet app on your compatible Apple device and place your registered finger on Touch ID as you hold your device within an inch of the contactless reader until the word ‘Done’ appears. Once the payment has been accepted, you will also see a checkmark on the screen. And voila, you have just paid using Apple Pay!

Where can I use it?
Apple Pay is accepted in hundreds of stores including grocery stores, gas stations, hotels and much more. You can also easily use it to pay within a lot of other apps.

There is never a bad time for convenience. Using Apple Pay is ideal for the day-to-day rush or even while shopping online. Considering setting up your cards through Apple Pay but finding that you need an upgraded iPhone® device or a repair to your iPad® tablet? Come in to your local Experimac today and we can help you out.

Experimac Cherry Hill Featured in

When Cherry Hill resident, Glenn Trommer opened his Experimac store in early July at Lee Newman Plaza, he brought fairly novel Apple product services to the south Jersey region, including Cherry Hill, Marlton, Haddonfield and Voorhees.

“Within my specific market there are no other stores that buy, sell, trade and repair Apple products. Experimac has a very unique value proposition and this provides me with the opportunity to gain specific market share.”

Opening his Experimac store fulfilled a long held dream, a promise he made to himself as he graduated from Emory University more than 30 years ago.

“I told myself when I graduated that I would have my own business one day, but since then had always held jobs in corporate America,” Trommer recalls.

Among those corporate positions, he was Director of e-commerce and implementation services for Office Depot, responsible for creating and implementing their business to business website back in 1996. “It left me with good knowledge of retail as well as business-to-business sales,” says Trommer.

With a long held passion for Apple products, his choice of Experimac as a franchise was easy. “I owned the first I-Pod and have owned I-Phones and a MacBook Air ever since,” Trommer says, adding that he looked at a wide range of franchise options before selecting Experimac.

Ultimately, Trommer sees his new shop, and those he expects to open in coming years, as an opportunity to mentor future employees as well as to build a legacy for his family. He anticipates that family members will become involved in the shop and that the venture will create opportunities for future employees.

“I hope that we will be able to create significant brand awareness as we open several stores, and also want to mentor my employees so that they gain an understanding of how to operate a retail business. They may someday own a store of their own,” Trommer says.

Trading Potatoes For PCs: South African Couple Is Anxious To Introduce Fast-Growing Brand As Experimac Celebrates Sale Of 100th Store

Experimac - Apple Experts

(Cape Town, South Africa)- It’s a landmark event that’s no small potatoes. But truth be told, potatoes played a big role in making it all happen.

On Friday, Aug. 19, Experimac, the one-of-a-kind retail storefront concept that specializes in sales of pre-owned Apple® computers, devices and much more – will be celebrating the sale of its 100th store, scheduled to open this October in Cape Town, South Africa.

Julian and Cesca Nieuwoudt will be introducing and growing the Experimac brand in South Africa as master license partners. To say that 43-year-old Julian and 38-year-old Cesca are making an extreme career transition would be an understatement.

For two decades, Julian has been in the farming industry, specializing in potato seed production. With Cesca joining him in the business since marrying 15 years ago, they grew to become one of South Africa’s top 20 potato producers. But two years ago, the couple received an offer for their land from South Africa’s largest carrot grower, who was looking for additional farming land. They decided the time was ripe for change and sold their farm.

Looking for a new, exciting opportunity with outstanding growth potential, Julian discovered Experimac while doing some online research and was immediately intrigued by the retailer that not only specializes in the sale of pre-owned Apple® computers and devices, but also offers repair of laptops, phones and tablets; trade-ins of existing devices; software and system updates; and sales of accessories.

Operating under the United Franchise Group umbrella, the Experimac brand was launched in November 2014 and now has 50 locations open in the United States with XX additional stores in various stages of development.

In addition to its entry into South Africa, Experimac recently opened a pilot store in Sydney, Australia. A master license has also been awarded for northern Mexico, with the pilot store already in development, while a deposit has been received for a master franchise in Chile. Plans are also under way for expansion in Canada, France, Nigeria and western Africa.

The Nieuwoudts will open their first Experimac in the Willowbridge Shopping Centre in Cape Town and plan to open an additional five stores themselves in the Western Cape while selling franchises in all major centres of South Africa including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

“We are looking forward to opening our pilot store and working with the United Franchise Group to build Experimac into one of the most well-known and reputable brands in South Africa,” Julian said.

As if launching new careers wasn’t enough, the Nieuwoudts are also uprooting their family and moving almost 1,000 km from their current home in Bloemfontein, Free State to Wellington in the Western Cape by year’s end.

“Making the move to the Cape is a challenge, but it is also something we both knew we would have to do,” Cesca said. “Besides, the Western Cape is the most beautiful part of South Africa and we are really looking forward to calling it home.”

For the Nieuwoudts – who estimate they have invested more than $400,000 in launching their new venture – the timing couldn’t be better for meeting the needs of consumers. The technology sector is obviously booming. In 2014, about 302 million computers were sold worldwide, generating about $304 billion in sales revenue. At the same time, nearly seven billion cell phone subscriptions were purchased worldwide by May 2014, nearly one for every person on the planet.

According to, having a blueprint for international growth has been increasing in popularity for U.S.-based franchisors. According to’s findings, “80 percent of the world’s population lives in areas that are considered emerging markets. The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that over 75 percent of the expected growth in the world’s trade over the next two decades will come from developing countries, particularly big emerging markets, which account for over half the world’s population, but only 25 percent of its gross domestic product.”

In addition, the report said that finding well-qualified master franchisees outside the U.S. can pave the way for growth of a franchise because “the qualified master franchisee can be the key to identifying and recruiting talented franchisees who fit the system and successfully execute the franchise concept.”

Since Experimac specializes in selling used products, particularly used Apple® products, the products can be sold at a price point that is accessible to a much-wider range of customers. When customers enter competing retail stores that sell new computers, Smartphones and tech equipment, only one out of every 100 or so people actually purchase something because of the high price point, but they are much more likely to buy at Experimac.

Experimac customers typically enjoy average savings of 60 percent on pre-owned Apple® products over big-box retailers. And Experimac takes the risk out of purchasing pre-owned equipment with a 90-day guarantee. If something breaks, Experimac will repair or replace the defective part at no cost.

“Apple® is a brand that is respected throughout the world. It is in high demand because of its reputation, but its products are also expensive to buy and repair,” Cesca said. “With Experimac, we will be able to supply South Africa with quality, pre-owned Apple® products with a warranty, as well provide a place to repair and upgrade all your Apple® products. And all work comes with a guarantee!”

The Story Behind Experimac Mt. Juliet

Coming to our sweet town just last year, Experimac has made a grand entrance. Although a franchise, the person behind the Mt. Juliet location is the reason we have one. Scott Maulsby moved here from Florida one year ago with his family. Owning the Mt. Juliet Experimac location is just a fraction of what Scott does and who he is. Scott and his wife have a ministry called The Kingdom Impact. They speak around the country about their experiences fostering and how they have beat the odds of keeping good relationship with birth parents even after reunification. It is because of who he is how he does things that makes this a great franchise for the company.

Scott has been in the working world since he was 12-years old. Starting out as a newspaper delivery boy and moving into entrepreneurship at 16 with his own lawn care business, he is a man with a strong work ethic and drive. Scott says that because he “was bored in college,” he decided to work more by managing a restaurant and getting “involved with the executive leadership of [his] fraternity to stay busy.” Working, working, working: Managing golf tournaments, 5-Star Resorts, growing a start up IT company into a 7-figure buy out. Shew. It makes me tired writing it.

Working tirelessly isn’t so bad, until you have a family with 3 toddlers. The exhaustion catches up and you have nothing left when you get home. “I could not continue the rigors and hours of working so hard and also be a good husband and father. This finally reached a boiling point when I landed at Walmart and was working nights while trying to raise 3 toddlers. I knew I needed a change and at the same time I saw an opportunity to build a family business that my children could not only work in but someday take over an manage themselves.” Scott says.

Experimac originated in West Palm Beach, FL, and was called, “The Mac Toy Store.” Scott knows a good thing when he sees it. He says, “My wife and I are friends with the founder and President of Experimac and the second I walked into his original store I knew I wanted to have my own. I bugged him for months about starting up another store and partnering with him but he kept putting me off. Little did I know he was in the process of franchising.”

It wasn’t just owning a franchise that had Scott excited. He loves Apple products. Although he was CEO of an IT company that used PCs and his customer base was filled with PC users, it all changed when his laptop died and one of his technicians told him to get a Mac. “With arms crossed and a resistance to this change I walked into The Mac Toy Store and bought my first iMac from Jim Muir, the founder of Experimac and family friend. I’ve never looked back and now have 9 Apple devices in my home.”

This business works here in Mt. Juliet because of this equation: A well-structured franchise with quality products PLUS an owner who loves the product and loves his community. “I love helping people with their technology and, most importantly, saving money! The prices we can offer put people into the computer or mobile devices of their dreams at a cost they can afford. It’s fun to watch their excitement and to help them learn about all the features that Apple products come with that can really change their lives.”

“My ‘job’ is to serve my community. I just happen to do that with a computer store… Parental controls, for instance, is a small but passionate piece of the business because it can impact the lives of children and parents and protect them from the evil that surrounds us. If I can help one person each day in even this small way I can lay my head down on my pillow and sleep well each night.”

So how did this Florida man end up in Mt. Juliet? “My parents live in Del Webb Providence so I’ve been visiting Mt. Juliet for years. When it came time to find a store front, Mt. Juliet proved to be the most welcoming area in Greater Nashville. Most people embrace local businesses and I felt comfortable every step of the way. I passed up many other spots that may have been ‘easier’ on a start up but I wouldn’t trade our location for anything.”

Mt. Juliet is unique. The majority of our people say you get the small town feel with the luxuries of being close to the big city. Scott says the small town feel comes simply from the people. “Mt. Juliet has a warm feel and a servant community. You can almost feel everyone looking out for you as you interact. And the police and fire/rescue bring a level of peace and protection unlike any place I’ve ever lived.”

Scott says his biggest hurdle in opening up a local business has bee trusting God with his finances. From the outside, it looks like business owners have it made. But it takes much perseverance and dedication to start something and see it through to fruition. Scott’s experience has been no different. “I just bet the farm on a used computer business and I make less than minimum wage while I try to build it. It’s scary and exhilarating at the same time. At the least it is motivating. At the most, it is strengthening my relationship with Jesus as the ultimate provider for me and my wife and children. Sometimes when I pretend that I am in charge or I am in control He likes to remind me that my pride is in the way. This is a lesson I really needed to learn.”

The purpose of his franchise ownership is two-fold. Yes, he needs to make a living to support his family, but this is a short-term goal. Ultimately, Scott desires to build a legacy for his children and serve his community. “Some people want to take profits and sponsor stadiums. And good for them. I’d rather tithe the gross sales of the business and fund non-profits. My ultimate goal is to have 5 stores, one for each child. And to continue creating jobs in the local community while teaching everyone how to use their computers and mobile devices to do good things for themselves and their loved ones.”

Battery Not Charging? Here’s Some Help!

Is your iPhone®, iPad® or iPod® battery not holding a charge anymore? We have all become incredibly dependent on these devices and not being able to trust that it will have any battery power left when you need it, can be nerve-wracking. But don’t price out a new device just yet. This is a common problem that many face, and many times it is easy to fix.

Take a look at these possible reasons for why your device is no longer holding a charge and ways to correct these issues.

  • Faulty charger
First things first, be sure that your charger is not broken. Look for any possible damage such as a torn or frayed cord, dirty or bent prongs or a bent USB. Make sure the USB adaptor is connected to the cord securely and be sure to try different outlets. You should also try different chargers because these are known to stop working out of the blue.
  • Dirty charging port
Take a look at the charging port on the bottom of the device and be sure it is clean. Be sure to take great care when doing this; if handled too aggressively, the port could be damaged and you may worsen the condition of your device. Inspect your port with a flashlight, and look for buildup of debris (sand, grime, etc.). Next, try to gently sweep it out using either a SIM eject tool or a large needle. Don’t use a toothpick or a cotton swab, as these items can easily leave more debris by either breaking or falling apart. Once you’re done cleaning the port, try to charge it again. You may even notice a firmer connection between the charging cord and the device.
  • Restart your device
Make sure you have given your device 30 minutes of uninterrupted charging before trying to restart it, even if it doesn’t appear to charge. To restart the device, hold down the power and home buttons at the same time for at least 10 seconds, then let go of the buttons once you see the Apple® logo. After this, let your device charge for another uninterrupted 30 minutes.

If your device still shows no signs of charging after trying all of these ideas, you should consider replacing the battery. Come into your local Experimac store with your device and charger; our technicians will inspect your device, replace its battery if necessary and have your device running like new, often while you wait.

How to Back Up Your Mac®

Priceless family photos, irreplaceable projects or a complete iTunes® library would be painful to lose. What would you do if your Mac computer was stolen or damaged and you lost these files? Spare yourself the heartache and invest some time and money in a backup option that will protect the files you need, no matter what. Here are our top 5 tips on what you need to know when backing up your data on your Mac:

  1. Time Machine®

This is Apple’s® built-in backup feature for Mac OS X®. It is a built in backup application that keeps up-to-date copies of your files on a hard drive destination in order to restore them at a later time. It requires an external drive that is connected to a Thunderbolt, FireWire or USB port on your computer. Though you can’t rely on Time Machine for a complete full-system backup, it is easily accessible, easy to complete and a great way to maintain regular backups.

  2. Cloning

Should something happen to your Mac, having a clone of your entire system is a very desirable option. Thankfully, OS X has a built in option for creating cloned images of your computer’s drive called Disk Utility. There are also options to pay for third party utilities which provide several other options and allow you to schedule backups.

  3. Cloud Storage

Whether using iCloud® or another cloud service provider, utilizing cloud storage is a great way to back up your Mac computer. With a cloud service, your files are safe regardless of what happens to your computer. There are also many thorough options for cloud storage with services such as Crash Plan or Live drive that can save more than just tiny subsets of your data like Dropbox. The only major downsides to cloud storage options are the amount of time it can take to complete a backup and restore a full system as well as the cost for sufficient space.

  4. Indestructible and Offsite Hard Drives

Should a drastic disaster occur such as a fire, or flood, a backup solution that is indestructible or located in a completely different location is a life-saver. It may be annoying to back up your files and take the drive to another location, but saving your files is always worth the hassle. There are also fireproof and waterproof disks sold, however these are large and not safe against theft.

  5. Backup Your Backup

The best way to ensure your files are safe is to not rely on only one back up method. Whether you want to use a Cloud and Time Machine, or the Bootable Backup and an offsite hard drive, it’s important to be prepared for the worst. By providing yourself with several easy backup methods you can be consistent with, you are ensuring the safety of your files as well as your peace of mind.

Mac® vs. PC: Which One Should You Buy?

Why You Should Consider a Mac

There are many aspects of purchasing a computer that can make the hunt quite challenging. There are many great options, however, it’s vital to consider the factors that make a computer safe, reliable and user-friendly. Your first decision as a computer shopper should be: Mac or PC?

We took a look at considerations such as safety, usability, reliability, affordability and re-sale value. Take a look at our suggestions:

Macs have long been considered the safer option, but what is the reality? Both PC and Mac computers are vulnerable to malware. However, due to the number and variety of PCs available, PCs are attacked by hackers more frequently than Mac computers.

PCs are sold by many companies including Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and Lenovo amongst others. Though there are many options and varieties of PCs, this promotes a less-controlled operating system. Because Mac computers are created, sold and updated by Apple®, they are able to maintain more stability with the operating system and security of Mac computers. Apple also optimizes their OS® to function with Mac components and, as a result, Mac computers typically crash less than PCs.

There are many factors that contribute to a computer’s usability. Part of the answer to the Mac vs. PC question is, what do you personally want in your computer?

Mac computers are known for their beautiful designs in addition to offering better physical components such as nicer screens due to their high resolution retina display. The average PC does not compare in its design or screen. Mac computers also offer iTunes®, which is one of the most convenient ways to enjoy music and movies on a computer. Though PCs do not offer iTunes, they do have a more thorough collection of gaming options and are sometimes considered the better gaming choice. Some PCs can also offer their user flexibility; however, the flexibility that comes with purchasing a PC also leaves it open to more vulnerabilities.

Macs are easier to incorporate into daily routines and anyone’s lifestyle thanks to the strengthened ties between Mac OS and iOS® devices such as your iPhone® and iPad®. iOS users now have the ability to start a note or email on their iPhone or iPad, and continue working on their Mac without taking additional steps to synchronize or save anything thanks to the new Hand-Off® feature from Apple.

When it comes down to the integrity of the software, Mac computers come with software that is specifically designed for Mac products. When purchasing a PC, understand that the software developed for the PC is generic and applied to any of the hundreds of PC models available.

Mac computers are considered reliable due to the incredible Mac OS operating system as well as the superb customer support offered on a Mac computer. Again, due to Apple providing everything for the Mac computer, you are provided with a thorough and all-inclusive computer experience.

Affordability and Re-Sale Value:
It is easy to find cheap PCs; however, these options do not offer the quality that comes with a Mac computer. There is no such thing as a cheaply-made Mac computer. A quality PC and Mac with similar specs will be comparable in price.

However, Apple computers hold their value much more – safety, usability and reliability. Additionally, people are attracted to the modern design associated with Macs. Because of these factors, Mac computers are considered a premium product. However, owning a premium Mac computer doesn’t have to come at a premium price. Mac computers are known for their longevity thanks to their stable operating systems and quality build, and buying a pre-owned Mac computer is a great option for the consumer who is not interested in getting a brand new Mac. Experimac’s prices on pre-owned Mac computers are often 60% lower than the retail price. On the other hand, purchasing a used PC is not recommended because they do not offer longevity and reliability of a Mac computer.

When you have considered all of your options, weighed the pros and cons, and ready to purchase, we are confident you’ll go with a Mac. If a pre-owned Mac is your chosen route, don’t hesitate to call or visit your local Experimac.

iPhone® in Water: Step-by-Step Guide

Whether it falls in the pool, a puddle or maybe even the toilet, dropping your iPhone® in water is something that’s happened to the best of us and is often fixable. Take a look at this step-by-step guide with the best steps to take should this happen to you:

  1. Don’t Panic
Fight the temptation to panic should you drop your phone in water. Get the phone out of the water right away! Keep in mind that this happens all the time and this is reparable. By panicking, you may fail to take the best measures in preventing further damage to your iPhone®. Damage to your phone can increase the longer it takes you to dry off your phone. The longer it sits in the water, the more time you’re allowing water to get in through the phone’s seams.
  2. Turn Off and Wipe Off Your Phone
Liquids can short-circuit electronic devices due to conductivity, so once you’ve picked up your phone, turn it off immediately. Don’t turn it back on, charge it or connect it to anything until you’ve allowed at least 48 hours for it to dry out. Be sure to wipe it off with an absorbent scratch-free cloth, paying special attention to the headphone jack and charge port. Remove and dry the SIM card and tray if your phone happens to be an AT&T/GSM model, and allow 48 hours before reinserting.
  3. Try Rice
Placing your phone in a sealable plastic bag or other conainer filled with 4 cups of uncooked instant rice could possibly help your phone dry off. Uncooked instant rice, or silica gel, have been known to absorb liquids in phones, without harming the phone. The grains of rice or pieces of silica are too large to enter the phone and damage it; however, they have been known to assist in absorbing liquids.
  4. Check Warranty Options
Be sure to check your warranty once your iPhone® has dried. Unfortunately, liquid damage is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty nor is it covered by AppleCare® coverage. Some iPhone® buyers invest in third party warranty options such as Asurion or SquareTrade, which can offer coverage for submersion or spills depending on the policy you have. Try to file a claim to replace your damaged iPhone® regardless of the phone’s condition.
  5. Visit Experimac – Liquid Cleaning
If, after exhausting these steps, you still find your iPhone® is damaged, consider liquid cleaning as your last attempt to save it. Come by and visit your local Experimac store today where we are able to offer you many iPhone® repair services including liquid cleaning. Our liquid cleaning service is safe, effective, and offered for many Apple® products. Our trained professionals will carefully dry excess liquids, gently scrub away any corrosion, and apply a safe 91% alcohol solution to clean and dry out the phone completely.

Experimac Canton Featured in HomeTown Life

Everyone has their limits, including John Park. “I just couldn’t get that excited and motivated about selling plastic resin anymore,” the 50-year-old Novi resident said. “I’ve always had an itch to start my own business; I just needed the right vehicle,” he said.

For the 25-year veteran of the automotive industry and his wife, Karen, that “vehicle” arrived earlier this month when they opened Experimac in Canton. Experimac is retail storefront that specializes in sales of pre-owned Apple® computers and devices; repair of laptops, phones and tablets; trade-ins of existing devices; software and system updates; and sales of accessories. Experimac’s store at 42114 Ford Road. is the state’s only location.

John had spent his career in sales and purchasing, while Karen has a background in human resources.

“When my two-year contract ended at my last company, I wanted to do something different,” Park said. “I knew that just about anything dealing with Apple® products would be a success. The more I found out about the business model, the more excited I got and the more I knew this was the ‘vehicle’ I was looking for.”
