Coming to our sweet town just last year, Experimac has made a grand entrance. Although a franchise, the person behind the Mt. Juliet location is the reason we have one. Scott Maulsby moved here from Florida one year ago with his family. Owning the Mt. Juliet Experimac location is just a fraction of what Scott does and who he is. Scott and his wife have a ministry called The Kingdom Impact. They speak around the country about their experiences fostering and how they have beat the odds of keeping good relationship with birth parents even after reunification. It is because of who he is how he does things that makes this a great franchise for the company.

Scott has been in the working world since he was 12-years old. Starting out as a newspaper delivery boy and moving into entrepreneurship at 16 with his own lawn care business, he is a man with a strong work ethic and drive. Scott says that because he “was bored in college,” he decided to work more by managing a restaurant and getting “involved with the executive leadership of [his] fraternity to stay busy.” Working, working, working: Managing golf tournaments, 5-Star Resorts, growing a start up IT company into a 7-figure buy out. Shew. It makes me tired writing it.

Working tirelessly isn’t so bad, until you have a family with 3 toddlers. The exhaustion catches up and you have nothing left when you get home. “I could not continue the rigors and hours of working so hard and also be a good husband and father. This finally reached a boiling point when I landed at Walmart and was working nights while trying to raise 3 toddlers. I knew I needed a change and at the same time I saw an opportunity to build a family business that my children could not only work in but someday take over an manage themselves.” Scott says.

Experimac originated in West Palm Beach, FL, and was called, “The Mac Toy Store.” Scott knows a good thing when he sees it. He says, “My wife and I are friends with the founder and President of Experimac and the second I walked into his original store I knew I wanted to have my own. I bugged him for months about starting up another store and partnering with him but he kept putting me off. Little did I know he was in the process of franchising.”

It wasn’t just owning a franchise that had Scott excited. He loves Apple products. Although he was CEO of an IT company that used PCs and his customer base was filled with PC users, it all changed when his laptop died and one of his technicians told him to get a Mac. “With arms crossed and a resistance to this change I walked into The Mac Toy Store and bought my first iMac from Jim Muir, the founder of Experimac and family friend. I’ve never looked back and now have 9 Apple devices in my home.”

This business works here in Mt. Juliet because of this equation: A well-structured franchise with quality products PLUS an owner who loves the product and loves his community. “I love helping people with their technology and, most importantly, saving money! The prices we can offer put people into the computer or mobile devices of their dreams at a cost they can afford. It’s fun to watch their excitement and to help them learn about all the features that Apple products come with that can really change their lives.”

“My ‘job’ is to serve my community. I just happen to do that with a computer store… Parental controls, for instance, is a small but passionate piece of the business because it can impact the lives of children and parents and protect them from the evil that surrounds us. If I can help one person each day in even this small way I can lay my head down on my pillow and sleep well each night.”

So how did this Florida man end up in Mt. Juliet? “My parents live in Del Webb Providence so I’ve been visiting Mt. Juliet for years. When it came time to find a store front, Mt. Juliet proved to be the most welcoming area in Greater Nashville. Most people embrace local businesses and I felt comfortable every step of the way. I passed up many other spots that may have been ‘easier’ on a start up but I wouldn’t trade our location for anything.”

Mt. Juliet is unique. The majority of our people say you get the small town feel with the luxuries of being close to the big city. Scott says the small town feel comes simply from the people. “Mt. Juliet has a warm feel and a servant community. You can almost feel everyone looking out for you as you interact. And the police and fire/rescue bring a level of peace and protection unlike any place I’ve ever lived.”

Scott says his biggest hurdle in opening up a local business has bee trusting God with his finances. From the outside, it looks like business owners have it made. But it takes much perseverance and dedication to start something and see it through to fruition. Scott’s experience has been no different. “I just bet the farm on a used computer business and I make less than minimum wage while I try to build it. It’s scary and exhilarating at the same time. At the least it is motivating. At the most, it is strengthening my relationship with Jesus as the ultimate provider for me and my wife and children. Sometimes when I pretend that I am in charge or I am in control He likes to remind me that my pride is in the way. This is a lesson I really needed to learn.”

The purpose of his franchise ownership is two-fold. Yes, he needs to make a living to support his family, but this is a short-term goal. Ultimately, Scott desires to build a legacy for his children and serve his community. “Some people want to take profits and sponsor stadiums. And good for them. I’d rather tithe the gross sales of the business and fund non-profits. My ultimate goal is to have 5 stores, one for each child. And to continue creating jobs in the local community while teaching everyone how to use their computers and mobile devices to do good things for themselves and their loved ones.”
