Migrating Your Data to a New Mac® Computer or Laptop: What You Need to Know

If you’re a Mac computer user and just bought a new MacBook Pro® laptop or another model, you may be wondering how to get all of your data from your old computer to the new one. It seems complicated, and the risk exists that you may lose files by overlooking instructions. Still, it is an essential task to copy all documents, apps, user accounts, and settings over to your new computer or laptop so that you ensure you’ll have full access to your work.

How to Migrate Your Data

Dealing with data migration on your own can be difficult, and this is why companies like Experimac of Mount Juliet have a team of experts on-hand to fulfill your data migration needs. Supplied with the newest hardware on the market, Experimac technicians provide same-day service, migrating data to your new computer so you don’t have to.

Read on if you are a do-it-yourself tech whiz, or a tech whiz in training. You can follow these steps for migrating data, if you’re ready to take the plunge on your own:

  1. Full device inspection – analyze the laptop or computer’s software, settings and power.
  2. Name your device – go into settings and name your computer, using something effective and personalized so you can recognize the device as your own.
  3. Install updates – be sure to check your app store and download any pending app updates, including third-party software updates, too!
  4. Connect devices – do this either by using the Time Machine® backup feature, a normal Ethernet cable or link the computers to the same Ethernet or Wi-Fi Network.
  5. Apple Migration Assistant® feature – use this feature to complete the transfer of your files from the old device to the current computer.
  6. Log in to your new account – check to verify your files have transferred successfully.

Although the Apple Migration Assistant feature was designed to walk Mac owners through migrating their data themselves, consumers who prefer assistance with this should contact Experimac of Mount Juliet to assist with affordable data migration. A thorough, in-store assessment can be done before migrating your data so that we can devise a plan to have your new computer or laptop up and running with full access to your old files in no time.

iPhone® Water Damage: What To Do If Your iPhone Device Gets Wet

Let’s be honest with ourselves – we love our iPhone devices! They keep us connected to our close friends, family and the world at large. And we pay a lot of money to keep connected. What happens when these beloved devices get wet? Well, in most cases, panic sets in fast.

If you have ever witnessed a friend being thrown into a pool with their phone in their hands or if you have ever dropped your phone in a puddle on a rainy day, you know all about that panic. Water can make an iPhone device useless fairly quickly. Important components can become damaged and in most cases, water damage voids any warranty that you may have. Before panic sets in, there are a few steps that you can take to prevent lasting water damage to your iPhone device.

Think About the Liquid

You might find yourself enjoying a relaxing weekend at a friend’s pool or on a great tropical vacation one day. Keeping this in mind, the water found within lakes and rivers or even the ocean contains minerals and small grains of dirt and sand. Once your phone dries, these particles can cause more damage to your iPhone device components. Bringing it in to Experimac of Mount Juliet and letting our local experts dry and clean your phone will ensure that all these foreign particles are not a problem in the long run.

Rice Is Not King

Although many have tried it, do not bother putting your iPhone device in a bag of rice. Dry, uncooked conventional rice will do nothing to help your phone dry out. If it turns back on after being put in the rice, it had nothing to do with the rice. You pretty much wasted the cups of rice your put your phone into as well as some very valuable time.

Act Quickly! Power Down, Dry It Off, Leave It Alone

As the panic sets in, it is critical to remove your iPhone device from the liquid right away and power it down immediately. Water and other liquids can short-circuit electronics so you don’t want it soaking in the water. Immediately turning off your iPhone device will minimize the chances of internal components being short circuited. If applicable, remove and dry the SIM card as well. Resist the urge to power your iPhone device back on! Instead, dry it off with a clean cloth focusing on the headphone jack and charge port.

Grab your iPhone device and head to Experimac of Mount Juliet; we will immediately get the ball rolling with our unique process. The sooner you bring the phone in to our location, the greater the chance that we can save your phone. This is critical because the more time passes, the more likely it is that components inside your phone may begin to corrode as a result of their exposure to water. We will assess the extent of the iPhone device’s water damage and see if there is any way that we can save your phone. Our first step is to carefully dry any excess liquid and then we gently scrub and remove any corrosion found on and inside your iPhone device. We will then remove the logic board and soak the phone in 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol for at-least 15 minutes to clean and dry it out thoroughly. This is why bringing in your iPhone device right away can make a world of difference.

Find Comfort In The Fact That All Is Not Lost

If we are not able to save the device, we have a large inventory of pre-owned iPhone devices at reasonable prices that you can purchase to replace your damaged iPhone device. Remember that if you’ve been backing your phone up on the iCloud® service or on your Mac® computer at home, you should have nothing to worry about because all of your beloved contacts, photos, etc. should be there and can be moved into your new phone easily.

Get Familiar With Your Warranty

Take a moment now, while your phone is working well, to review the terms of your warranty so you’ll know what you’re entitled to if you’re ever in this situation. Water damage to your iPhone device voids your manufacturer’s warranty including any additional AppleCare® warranty coverage you may have purchased. Some third party insurance companies will cover submersion, spills, and accidental drops. If you are covered, consider filing a claim with your insurance company. Again, taking action quickly and bringing your phone in to Experimac Mount Juliet  right away can be the critical factor! So remember, when you or someone you know has the awful experience of watching their much loved iPhone go for a swim, Experimac’s local experts are here to save the day!

The Story Behind Experimac Mt. Juliet

Coming to our sweet town just last year, Experimac has made a grand entrance. Although a franchise, the person behind the Mt. Juliet location is the reason we have one. Scott Maulsby moved here from Florida one year ago with his family. Owning the Mt. Juliet Experimac location is just a fraction of what Scott does and who he is. Scott and his wife have a ministry called The Kingdom Impact. They speak around the country about their experiences fostering and how they have beat the odds of keeping good relationship with birth parents even after reunification. It is because of who he is how he does things that makes this a great franchise for the company.

Scott has been in the working world since he was 12-years old. Starting out as a newspaper delivery boy and moving into entrepreneurship at 16 with his own lawn care business, he is a man with a strong work ethic and drive. Scott says that because he “was bored in college,” he decided to work more by managing a restaurant and getting “involved with the executive leadership of [his] fraternity to stay busy.” Working, working, working: Managing golf tournaments, 5-Star Resorts, growing a start up IT company into a 7-figure buy out. Shew. It makes me tired writing it.

Working tirelessly isn’t so bad, until you have a family with 3 toddlers. The exhaustion catches up and you have nothing left when you get home. “I could not continue the rigors and hours of working so hard and also be a good husband and father. This finally reached a boiling point when I landed at Walmart and was working nights while trying to raise 3 toddlers. I knew I needed a change and at the same time I saw an opportunity to build a family business that my children could not only work in but someday take over an manage themselves.” Scott says.

Experimac originated in West Palm Beach, FL, and was called, “The Mac Toy Store.” Scott knows a good thing when he sees it. He says, “My wife and I are friends with the founder and President of Experimac and the second I walked into his original store I knew I wanted to have my own. I bugged him for months about starting up another store and partnering with him but he kept putting me off. Little did I know he was in the process of franchising.”

It wasn’t just owning a franchise that had Scott excited. He loves Apple products. Although he was CEO of an IT company that used PCs and his customer base was filled with PC users, it all changed when his laptop died and one of his technicians told him to get a Mac. “With arms crossed and a resistance to this change I walked into The Mac Toy Store and bought my first iMac from Jim Muir, the founder of Experimac and family friend. I’ve never looked back and now have 9 Apple devices in my home.”

This business works here in Mt. Juliet because of this equation: A well-structured franchise with quality products PLUS an owner who loves the product and loves his community. “I love helping people with their technology and, most importantly, saving money! The prices we can offer put people into the computer or mobile devices of their dreams at a cost they can afford. It’s fun to watch their excitement and to help them learn about all the features that Apple products come with that can really change their lives.”

“My ‘job’ is to serve my community. I just happen to do that with a computer store… Parental controls, for instance, is a small but passionate piece of the business because it can impact the lives of children and parents and protect them from the evil that surrounds us. If I can help one person each day in even this small way I can lay my head down on my pillow and sleep well each night.”

So how did this Florida man end up in Mt. Juliet? “My parents live in Del Webb Providence so I’ve been visiting Mt. Juliet for years. When it came time to find a store front, Mt. Juliet proved to be the most welcoming area in Greater Nashville. Most people embrace local businesses and I felt comfortable every step of the way. I passed up many other spots that may have been ‘easier’ on a start up but I wouldn’t trade our location for anything.”

Mt. Juliet is unique. The majority of our people say you get the small town feel with the luxuries of being close to the big city. Scott says the small town feel comes simply from the people. “Mt. Juliet has a warm feel and a servant community. You can almost feel everyone looking out for you as you interact. And the police and fire/rescue bring a level of peace and protection unlike any place I’ve ever lived.”

Scott says his biggest hurdle in opening up a local business has bee trusting God with his finances. From the outside, it looks like business owners have it made. But it takes much perseverance and dedication to start something and see it through to fruition. Scott’s experience has been no different. “I just bet the farm on a used computer business and I make less than minimum wage while I try to build it. It’s scary and exhilarating at the same time. At the least it is motivating. At the most, it is strengthening my relationship with Jesus as the ultimate provider for me and my wife and children. Sometimes when I pretend that I am in charge or I am in control He likes to remind me that my pride is in the way. This is a lesson I really needed to learn.”

The purpose of his franchise ownership is two-fold. Yes, he needs to make a living to support his family, but this is a short-term goal. Ultimately, Scott desires to build a legacy for his children and serve his community. “Some people want to take profits and sponsor stadiums. And good for them. I’d rather tithe the gross sales of the business and fund non-profits. My ultimate goal is to have 5 stores, one for each child. And to continue creating jobs in the local community while teaching everyone how to use their computers and mobile devices to do good things for themselves and their loved ones.”

iTunes Match® service, Apple Music® service, iCloud Music Library® service and Your iPhone® device: Mt. Juliet Your Local Apple Experts

One of the best features that Apple® products offer is the ability to sync music, images, documents, notes, and other items across multiple devices.

When it comes to syncing across multiple devices, nothing seems to be more popular than music. Over the years, many people have purchased hundreds of digital music files that they listen to at home, in their car, or while they work out. Apple Inc. allows us to play our music on our computers, phones, iPad® devices, and Apple TV® devices.

Because of this, we only have to purchase a digital music file once and then we can enjoy it across multiple devices, whenever we want. This sounds like what we have all wanted for years! Unfortunately, setting this up is not always intuitive and that can make some individuals feel like they’re not getting their money’s worth.

Our trained technicians at Experimac of Mount Juliet take the time to learn all of Apple Inc.’s new software launches both from a backend perspective as well as from a user’s perspective. We want to make sure that our customers are using tools that are beneficial to their needs and set up in a way that they can maintain and update in the future.

Not all tools are right for everyone. For example, if you don’t want to own physical files on your computer but want to stream music on demand, Apple Music service fits your needs. If you have a lot of CDs that you want to listen to on your iPhone device, then iTunes Match service is the best fit.

Here are some great tools that Apple Inc. offers to make listening to music across multiple devices easy, seamless, and fun for everyone:

  • iTunes Match service – For $24.99/year you can import your old CDs along with the new and previously downloaded files into one location. iTunes Match service allows you to store your music files in the iCloud service. No matter where you purchased a file from, iTunes Match service can store that file in your library, allowing you to listen wherever you are.
  • Apple Music – Free for 3 months and then $9.99/month. For a family plan, it will cost you $15/month. Apple Music service combines everything that users love about Spotify with the features previously loved with iTunes® service. Store all of your purchased files alongside streamable music that you can listen to without having to purchase it. There are benefits to the Apple Music service over Spotify or other streaming services. For example, there are several artists whose music is licensed only to play on the Apple Music service. Plus, no additional download will be needed since the Apple Music service is already alive and well in your iPhone device.

Still not sure what is right for you? We get it! Apple Inc. aims to make our lives easier and more productive but sometimes it can be difficult to know what works best for our individual needs. Contact Experimac of Mount Juliet to learn more about the music services available to you and to see which one is right for your unique needs.

Protect Your Children From Digital Temptation

Protect Your Children From Digital Temptation

The average ago of exposure to pornography is 8. The top demographic in the porn industry is 12-17 year olds, and no, not just boys, girls as well. If that fact doesn’t give you a jolt, how about this one – the 28th most downloaded App in the Apple App Store is a photo ‘vault’ that is disguised as a calculator.  Guess what type of photos it contains.

It’s hard to imagine that your son or daughter might be charged with a felony before they leave high school and end up destroying their chances at success later in life.  This nightmare is a reality for parents around the country as well meaning children in dating relationships let their guard down to share pictures with their boyfriend or girlfriend that eventually end up all over school and the community.  When the authorities are brought in, the trail of devastation is long.

As a parent of 5 children (21, 20, 3, 3, 2) I was disturbed by these tidbits of information on a variety of levels.  When I was growing up there was no such thing as mobile devices.  Even talking to a member of the opposite sex on the phone meant I was attached to the wall by a cord and my parents could here every word I said.  Fast forward 20 years and our children have access to pornography and the opposite sex in their pocket by simply touching a button.

If you are a parent or a grandparent you might be asking yourself, ‘How can I protect my children from this temptation?’  Because of the easy road to pornography many of the devices and computers we have come with built in controls and restrictions.  These tools can provide peace of mind and help fill in the gaps.  Let’s face it.  We can’t always be staring over their shoulder but we can use technology to limit and monitor activity.

Nothing technology offers will ever replace a parent.  The best tool we have is communication and observation.  And nothing beats truly knowing what is on the hearts of our children.  But when those tools fail us or are not readily available we can use the same technology that tempts to protect.  Simply limiting tfhe amount of time a computer will operate can be enough of a deterrent.  If that’s not enough, there are options to completely restrict a mobile phone and limit it to it’s main purpose only.  Yes, you can make them simply a phone.

Parents and grandparents have their own style.  When I talk to parents that are dealing with pornography and the temptation of sexting I usually see two different philosophies.  One style is to give the child all the access in the beginning and then take features away and limit activity as a punishment for poor behavior.  And of course the opposite style is to limit any and all access until trust is built and freedoms are added based on preferred behavior and maturity.  the philosophy is your choice based on your style and your child’s specific situations.

1 Corinthians 10:13 promises God will always give us a way out of any given temptation.  While technology can be the perpetrator, it can also be the way out if you are properly trained and educated on it’s capabilities.

In His hands,

Out of Warranty Repair: Apple Inc. vs. Experimac Repair Costs

Out of Warranty Repair

Imagine waking up on a Monday morning to find that your MacBook® laptop won’t turn on. All of your work and personal files are saved on your broken computer, and the warranty has just run out. Panic sets in as you begin the decision process of whether to replace or repair your broken laptop. Can you safely say that you know the cost comparison, and do you really know all of your available options?

Replace vs. Repair
Laptop repair rates have gone down to 24%, down from 36% in 2010. Still, each time a device breaks, the costly and emotional decision of repair versus replace must be made. The answer lies in the repair rates. If you’re spending 50% of the cost of a new Mac® computer or iOS® device on your repair, then you might as well replace your product with a pre-owned model. Experimac of Mount Juliet offers affordable pre-owned Apple® products if you decide replacement is your route. On the other hand, if you lean more towards seeking repairs, it is critical to do a price comparison between Apple Inc. repair costs and repair costs at Experimac of Mount Juliet. In a 2013 online annual questionnaire, including 29,281 subscribers, Consumer Reports Magazine informs, “People who used independent repair shops were more satisfied with the repairs than those who used factory service.” Experimac will have your repair completed within hours of bringing in your device or by the next day. All things considered, we urge you to bring your broken Mac computer and iOS device, especially for those repairs that are out of warranty, to Experimac of Mount Juliet.

Apple Inc. vs. Experimac Repair Costs
If you have ever been on Apple Inc.’s repair pricing page, you have seen the outrageous repair costs. Apple Inc.’s out of warranty costs are even higher. If you scroll to the bottom of their pricing page, you will see a disclaimer stating, “Your replacement iPod® device might be new, used, or refurbished. If your original iPod device was damaged as a result of an accident or abuse, service might not be available“. If your Mac computer or iOS device just broke, the last thing you need is to break the bank or be turned away. And don’t forget how quickly we can get the repairs done in comparison to shipping your device away for days at a time. Experimac of Mount Juliet offers affordable repair rates, even for out of warranty repairs. We are a growing store selling pre-owned Apple products and we are committed to providing exceptional customer service and a 90-day warranty on all repairs.
